En los últimos años, se han investigado biomarcadores que ayuden a predecir la
presencia de una infección bacteriana en niños con neutropenia febril. Dos de ellos
han sido la procalcitonina y la interleuquina 6, ambos son biomarcadores muy
sensibles, por lo que el riesgo de pasar por alto una posible infección bacteriana es
bajo. Su principal utilidad se encuentra en identificar a aquellos grupos con bajo riesgo
de desarrollar una infección bacteriana, principalmente cuando se usan en
combinación; de esta manera, se disminuye el uso innecesario de antibióticos y el
internamiento hospitalario y se logra mejorar la calidad de vida de los pacientes y sus
familiares.
