Objective: Was to determine whether the diet rich in iron heme can be considered an adjuvant to improve the treatment of anemia in patients postpartum Hospital Guillermo Kaelin de la fuente.
Methodology: Analytic, prospective and longitudinal study. Included postpartum patiens with mild anemia without comorbilities, and those who received other treatments for anemia were excluded. The calculated sample was probabilistically separated into a control group consisting of 41 postpartum patients who were treated with ferrous sulfate; and a group of exposed consisting of 39 patients, which in addition to ferrous sulfate, consumed a diet rich in heme iron equivalent to 30 mg per week. Both groups were evaluated by blood study at 6 hr. of childbirth and month of this. These changes were analyzed using Mann-Whitney's U statistical test with SPSS version 24.
Results: The differences in blood results in the immediate postpartum period and one month later in both groups were compared, finding the largest increase in hemoglobin (37.55 vs 43.60 and p x 0.243), hematocrit (36.95 vs 44.23 and p x 0.161) and total number of red blood cells (35.13 vs 46.14 and p x 0.033) in the exposed group in the three variables evaluated, although the increase in the number of red blood cells was the only one statistically significant.
Conclusion: The diet rich in heme iron associated with ferrous sulfate has been shown to increase the number of red blood cells more than ferrous sulfate alone. Multicenter clinical trials are suggested to assess whether heme iron as an adjuvant to ferrous sulfate decreases anemia levels.
